Verso libre by María Moreno: flamenco only you can hear
In Verso libre, María Moreno offers a radically different flamenco experience: intimate, sensory, and deeply contemporary. Her performance at the 2024 Seville Biennial, staged within the grounds of the Cartuja Monastery, transforms cante jondo into an expanded choreography delivered through wireless headphones. Flamenco that isn’t heard “in the air,” but directly in your body.
Technique and emotional connection
From the very first moment, the wireless headphones make all the difference. There’s no stage, no speakers: just you, walking through the courtyards of the CAAC, with a stream of sound reaching you cleanly, free of interference, as if you were the only receiver. That private listening, which doesn’t intrude on the space or on others, lets every heel strike, every guitar phrase, every vocal gesture of María’s arrive sharp and close, as if whispered directly in your ear.
This isn’t just a technical choice — it’s an artistic stance. This tool turns the performance into an intensely personal experience, where the audience stops being spectators and becomes an active, emotional witness.
Space, body, sound: all merged into one
The piece unfolds as a journey through different points of the Monastery — the Arab courtyard, a garden with a pergola, and the grand central courtyard. In each one, the sound builds a different landscape, with millimeter precision, thanks to a transmission that follows every movement of María’s, every string plucked by Raúl Cantizano, every breath of Manuel Masaedo.
What’s most striking is how the physical setting and the sound intertwine: you hear a quejío or a breath while watching the light shift between centuries-old columns. Here, technology doesn’t compete with flamenco — on the contrary, it opens up a new dimension for it.
An experience that’s yours, only yours
There’s something deeply transformative in the way this piece activates your presence. With the headphones on, you feel isolated from the outside murmur and, at the same time, intensely present. You’re not watching a show: you’re part of it. You walk, you observe, you feel. Sometimes you stop, unsure whether to applaud or stay silent. Everything is designed to make you aware of your body, your listening, your being there.
The final moment, when you take off the headphones, marks a break. It’s like waking from a dream. And what you’ve experienced is no longer “a flamenco show,” but an inner experience, a free verse that has passed through you.
