The piece

Three concerts on three consecutive nights, one for each pillar of flamenco: guitar, dance and song. The audience heard them on wireless headphones.

Double bassist Pablo Martín Caminero approaches them from a jazz-rooted trio. Al Toque reinterprets compositions written for flamenco guitar, without a guitar, using piano and percussion. Al Baile, a world premiere, brings in the dancer María Moreno. Al Cante weaves the voice of Jerez singer David Carpio into Caminero’s compositions.

The space

The Sala Fundición of the Real Fábrica de Artillería is a tall industrial hall with a timber roof, a skylight and masonry walls. The audience sat on frontal tiered seating, with a capacity of 160.

The challenges

>5 sEstimated RT60 of the hall

The Sala Fundición has an estimated reverberation time (RT60) of over 5 seconds. A conventional PA would excite the room and the definition of the trio would be lost in the reverberation tail.

The solution was to remove the PA. All of the concert’s sound reached the audience through wireless headphones: around 200 units for a capacity of 160. The mix goes straight to the ear and the hall’s reverberation stays in the background. Each night had a different line-up on the same stage, and the setup had to change from one night to the next while keeping a common base.

Listening

The mix is the same for everyone. What each person decides is the level they listen at.

Each member of the audience received the concert through their headphones and set the volume with the control on their own headset.
