Ardines Cave Concert 2023

The event, organized by La Xata La Rifa under the direction of Mónica Cofiño, staged a singular performance in October 2023 at an exceptional natural setting: La Cuevona de Ardines, a geological cave with a very particular acoustic and no electrical supply. Faced with those conditions, the team opted for a clean, self-sufficient technical solution: sound transmission via wireless headphones, which let the audience hear the piece with maximum clarity and no ambient amplification.

Minimal technology, maximum impact

The use of wireless headphones wasn’t decorative or conceptual — it was a key technical decision that solved several challenges at once. On one hand, it avoided the need for conventional amplification in a space with no electricity; on the other, it guaranteed a high-quality listening experience, regardless of the cave’s acoustic conditions.

The transmission ran on a self-contained portable system, with no visible cables or intrusive devices in the environment. This kept the natural character of the space intact, while still delivering clear sound, free of unwanted reverberation, with a precise balance between voice, acoustic instruments, and subtle sonic details.

Space and bodies

The setup let the audience move freely through the cave without losing signal or disrupting the listening experience. This encouraged a direct relationship between body, environment, and sound, without conventional staging. The cave wasn’t just a physical container: its temperature, natural light, and irregular layout were part of how the piece was perceived as a whole.

The artistic proposal

The group Las Bacchantes, made up of four vocalists and multi-instrumentalists, built a hybrid repertoire spanning choral, folk, and experimental music. Thanks to the headphone transmission, vocal and harmonic nuances were captured in detail — something that wouldn’t have been possible with open sound reinforcement in a cave. The combination of minimal means (harmonium, percussion, voice) with this portable micro-technology created an experience of deep focus and closeness, even with a full ensemble.

A system in service of the place

The entire production adapted to the real conditions of the environment: no direct power consumption, no visual interference, and fully portable, self-sufficient equipment. The technical approach, discreet yet precise, didn’t just support the piece — it was part of its language. No additions, no artifice. Just space, listening, and presence.
